WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, AS CONCERNED ALUMNI, STUDENTS, PARENTS, FACULTY AND FRIENDS OF THE LOYOLA COMMUNITY (“Concerned4Loyola.org” A/K/A “Concerned For Loyola”) HEREBY DEMAND THE FOLLOWING OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF LOYOLA UNIVERSITY MARYLAND (“Loyola”):
- The immediate cessation—and complete reversal—of the proposal announced by the Loyola Conference and approved by they, the Office of the President and the Office of Admissions, to make the ACT and SAT admissions tests optional for undergraduate admission to Loyola University Maryland. Keeping these tests required ensures that Loyola conforms to industry standards and protects its reputation amongst public and private-sector employers.
- A plan for exemptions to the SAT and ACT standardized tests, if an applicant has demonstrated economic hardship or must contend with a difficult familial situation; or if an applicant can provide proof of a learning disability; or if an applicant can provide proof of a pattern that the applicant systematically under-performs on standardized testing.
- Assurances that for future proposals of great import which concern the value of the degrees granted by Loyola, and/or which can potentially impact the reputation and prestige of Loyola as an institution both within academia and in the private and public sectors; a period of public comment will be announced during which the opinions and views of alumni, parents of current students, current students themselves, and faculty may be heard, publicly made-known, and given thorough and honest consideration, before any votes are to be made on such issues by the Loyola Conference or Academic Senate.
GIVEN THAT the primary, publicly-stated rationale behind Loyola’s decision to join the “SAT Optional Movement” was to further increase the diversity within the Student Body, WE FURTHER respectfully submit for honest consideration and implementation, the following proposals to better achieve that end:
- A proposal to establish tutoring programs at Baltimore City and Baltimore County Public Schools for at-risk and struggling youth, to achieve true racial diversity at Loyola that is done in the spirit of its Baltimore roots and in pursuit of its Jesuit ideals.
- The creation of and subsequent release to alumni, students, parents, faculty, and administrators, of a clear and well-devised plan for achieving comprehensive diversity in the undergraduate student body; a plan which considers not just racial and ethnic identity, but which also strongly considers class status, economic stratum, geographic location, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, and gender.
We feel that Loyola's decision, if implemented, threatens to seriously undermine Loyola's academic reputation, thereby devaluing the hard work and effort which we, as Concerned Alumni, Students, Parents, Faculty and Friends of Loyola Maryland have invested into our beloved Alma Mater. We are not necessarily supportive of the SAT, nor are we dismissive of the legitimate concerns raised as to its imperfect nature. However, it and the ACT nevertheless remain widely-utilized and respected industry standards which employers and college admissions guidance counselors use to evaluate a university’s given repute.
We believe this latest proposal by Loyola to be fundamentally inconsistent with the Strategic Plan, endorsed by both the Administration and the Board of Trustees, to make Loyola into the “leading comprehensive Catholic university in the United States”.
The inclusion of our names as signatories to this petition indicates our support for the aforementioned demands and proposals. We, as members of Concerned For Loyola, await a just and proper response from the Administration and Board of Trustees as to our demands and proposals.
